Why I Love Pokemon

I originally had a very different blog post planned for today, but as things changed, I realize there was one thing I just really wanted to talk about. Why I love Pokemon.

Let’s start at the beginning. I’m 7 and hanging out with my cousins and one of them shows me a Pokemon card. It’s a Doduo. From there, I’m hooked. I start collecting the cards and as I get ready to move halfway across the country, my aunt buys me a Gameboy Color and Pokemon Yellow.

Now, this is the first video game I own and I am terrible at it. I can’t figure out how to get out of the room, the house, how to beat Brock etc. So I get Pokemon Blue and I’m a little better at it. Then Pokemon Gold and Silver come out and I’m obsessed.

I won’t delve into the whole detailed story, but I think part of the reason I like Pokemon is that it’s been a constant. I have been playing these games since I was 7. No matter how my interest has waxed and waned, I’ve always come back to it. i just love the game.

Part of the reason I think for that is the Pokemon themselves. They are so interesting and different from one another. Every time a new generation of Pokemon comes out, I get excited all over again. I like to learn as much about them as I can. They are just so interesting to me.

Much of my life, I’ve felt like no one really got my interest in Pokemon. Since I was a kid during the great PokeCraze, it became considered immature to like Pokemon pretty early on. However, I still liked it. But also, going to an ultra-conservative elementary school as a child didn’t help in the slightest. I wasn’t until I actually got to high school that I kinda started finding people to play Pokemon with. But even then, it didn’t work out for one reason or another. That’s why I am so happy the internet exists. It’s because of the internet I can watch and talk to people who care about Pokemon as much as I do.

So watching Nationals on stream last weekend kinda brought all this home to me. This is a franchise I’m passionate about and for too long I’ve been keeping that dormant for one reason or another. I am going to start sharing my love of the game with everyone.
